Nutha was a Southern Water Tribe citizen. After the end of the Hundred Year War, she and her sister Niyok left the tribe to find work, taking jobs at the Earthen Fire Refinery in the Earth Kingdom.[2]
History
Sometime before 102 AG, Nutha and her sister Niyok left their home in the Southern Water Tribe to work at the Earthen Fire Refinery. One day, while the siblings and another friend were on a break, Nutha's sister spotted her old friend, Katara, and happily ran up to her to greet her. After the waterbender merrily called out to Nutha, Nutha noncommittally glared back at Katara and promptly called Niyok back to where they were sitting.[2]
Nutha refused to leave the mine, believing that she would be fired if she did so.
When she was later working in Loban's iron mine, Nutha and the other workers were told by Sokka and Katara to leave the mine as it was unstable and about to collapse. She refused to go, complaining that unlike Katara and Sokka's fortunes in traveling with the Avatar, she did not have as many opportunities after the war due to the devastation of the Southern Water Tribe. Nutha went on to state that she needed her job to survive and if she were to leave, she was convinced she would get fired. However, when the mine collapsed, she and several others became trapped, with only Toph's metalbending sustaining them.[3]
The group was eventually rescued by Aang and Toph's students and Nutha was reunited with Niyok, who took her to receive care for her injuries. On the way, Nutha stopped to thank Katara for her part in saving their lives.
After recovering from the accident and General Old Iron's failed attack on the mining town, Nutha reconciled with Katara and the girls got caught up on old times back home in the Southern Water Tribe, such as asking the waterbender about Auntie Ashuna's seal jerky. Katara had to leave to help a saddened Aang, but promised Nutha that soon she would come back home. Nutha stopped to apologize for acting coldly to Katara earlier, saying she acted like an idiot and that she and Sokka had both made her and other Southern Water Tribe citizens feel proud.[1]
